Kentucky walked into Neyland Stadium on Saturday night with a 7-1 record, the No. 6 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings and a share of first place in the SEC. The Wildcats walked out with their dream season in pieces. Tennessee won 34-6, scoring 24 straight points in the second half and forcing three turnovers from the team that had protected the ball better than anyone in the league.

For three quarters, this was still a game. Tennessee led 10-6 at halftime and 13-6 after three quarters. Then the fourth quarter turned into a rout, with the Volunteers scoring 21 points in the final 15 minutes.

A one-score game for three quarters

Tennessee grabbed the lead late in the first quarter when Daune Morris broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run, and the Volunteers never trailed again. Kentucky had chances to answer. Quarterback Kenny Minchey, who had not thrown an interception since Week 2, was picked off in the end zone by Tennessee safety Dejuan Lane in the first quarter. The Wildcats reached the red zone twice and came away with field goals both times.

A Cooper Ranvier field goal early in the third quarter stretched the lead to 13-6. Kentucky had made a habit of second half comebacks this season, rallying from double-digit deficits in three of its seven wins. This time, the comeback never came.

Three turnovers broke Kentucky

Kentucky built its season on clean football. The Wildcats arrived with only five turnovers all season, the fewest in the SEC, and none in their previous four games. Tennessee wrecked that identity in one night. Safety Qua Moss forced both of Kentucky’s lost fumbles, and Lane’s interception gave the Volunteers three takeaways.

“We had three turnovers,” Kentucky coach Will Stein said. “That was the story of the game, the turnovers.” The last one finally turned into points. Early in the fourth quarter, after Moss forced another Minchey fumble that Mariyon Dye recovered, backup quarterback Faizon Brandon flipped a short pass to Mike Matthews, who took it 24 yards for the touchdown that made it 20-6. Kentucky also failed on both of its fourth down tries in the final quarter.

Bishop and the defense finished it

Running back DeSean Bishop did the rest. Bishop ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second half, including the late score with 1:06 left that set the final margin. Linebacker Arion Carter led a defense that never let Kentucky reach the end zone, piling up 13 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss.

The win was Tennessee’s sixth straight over Kentucky, and coach Josh Heupel is now 5-0 against the Wildcats. Kentucky’s six-game winning streak is over.

The playoff picture flipped in one night

Both teams are now 7-2, but they are headed in opposite directions. The win was Tennessee’s second over a top 10 team this season, after the Volunteers beat Alabama earlier this fall, and it keeps their playoff hopes alive ahead of a trip to Texas A&M on November 14. For Kentucky, the loss takes away any margin for error the Wildcats had left.

One day earlier, this game looked like the test that would prove whether Kentucky’s dream season was real. We framed it that way in our college football preview of Saturday’s seven ranked matchups. Neyland Stadium gave the answer. Follow the rest of the playoff race in our Sports coverage.
