Angelina Jolie did not release a film, give an interview or post anything herself this week. She simply joined a speaker list. Even so, her name climbed to the top of Google searches in the United States on Saturday morning, hours after organizers announced that she will be a featured speaker at the 2026 ASEAN Inclusive Growth Summit in Manila on November 11.
The announcement came from the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, which is hosting the summit. It called Jolie “a global voice for human rights and humanitarian action” and said she will join leaders and changemakers from business, government and civil society to talk about opportunity, inclusion and a more resilient future across Southeast Asia.
A closing session about Cambodia
Jolie’s part of the program is a closing discussion titled “From Memory to Possibility: Cambodia, Courage and the Power of Staying.” She will appear with Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh, and the session will be moderated by Shamina Singh, the founder and president of the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth.
The pairing has a history. Panh worked with Jolie on First They Killed My Father, her 2017 film about author and activist Loung Ung and her childhood under the Khmer Rouge. Organizers say the Manila talk will focus on Cambodia’s recovery, on listening to local voices, and on building partnerships that last longer than any single project.
The topic also fits the work Jolie is most known for outside movies. Her summit biography notes that she has spent more than two decades on humanitarian causes, starting as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency in 2001 and later serving as a special envoy.
A lineup built for Southeast Asia
The summit is hosted by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth with the ASEAN Business Advisory Council Philippines. This year’s theme is “Resilient and Rising,” and the program lists 30 sessions and 51 speakers drawn from business, government, civil society and entertainment.
Jolie shares the bill with Tony Award winning singer and actress Lea Salonga, who will sit down with broadcaster Rico Hizon for a session called “In Unison: Amplifying Every Voice in ASEAN.” Fashion designer Rajo Laurel and former Miss International Kylie Verzosa are also among the announced speakers.

Why the internet noticed
The honest answer is that this is not a major American news event, and the story knows it. The summit is a regional policy gathering in the Philippines, and organizers have not announced any public tickets or broadcast for Jolie’s session. Most people doing the searching will never see her speak.
What the spike really shows is the pull of one name. Jolie keeps a low public profile and takes on few public events, so a simple speaker announcement becomes a curiosity. There is also a real audience behind it. Millions of Filipino Americans follow news from Manila closely, and Salonga’s name on the same program gave the announcement a second push, at home and abroad.
Whatever drove the searches, they point to a real date on the calendar. On November 11, Jolie will be in Manila, on a stage, talking about Cambodia and the power of staying. You can follow more stories like this in our Entertainment coverage.
