Ten years after Mike Biggs and Molly Flynn signed off, searches for the cast of Mike & Molly are surging again, and it is not hard to see why. The CBS sitcom, which ran from 2010 to 2016, launched one of the biggest movie stars of her generation, and its two leads have had two of the most eventful post-sitcom decades in television. Here is where the cast is now, with the record kept straight.

The show in short

Mike & Molly premiered on CBS on September 20, 2010, created by Mark Roberts with Chuck Lorre as executive producer. Chicago police officer Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) and schoolteacher Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy) meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, and the series followed their romance, marriage and family life across six seasons and 127 episodes, ending on May 16, 2016.

Melissa McCarthy (Molly Flynn)

McCarthy was not a star when the show began; she was one by its second season. She won the 2011 Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy for playing Molly, and Bridesmaids, released while the first season aired, earned her an Academy Award nomination. A second Oscar nomination followed for the drama Can You Ever Forgive Me? in 2018, and she played Ursula in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid in 2023. With her husband, Ben Falcone, she runs On the Day Productions, which produces many of her films. Of everyone in the cast, her trajectory is the simplest to summarize: the sitcom was the launchpad, not the peak.

Billy Gardell (Mike Biggs)

Gardell went almost directly into another Chuck Lorre sitcom, leading Bob Hearts Abishola on CBS for five seasons from 2019 to 2024, and he continues to tour as a stand-up. His most talked-about second act, though, is his health. In interviews with Entertainment Tonight, Gardell has said he lost more than 150 pounds from a peak of over 370, settling around 205 to 210 pounds, after bariatric surgery and a rebuilt relationship with food. He says his type 2 diabetes is gone and that his resting heart rate dropped from 113 to 68. His own summary of the surgery is the line he repeats: “The only thing I would say is to understand that the operation is not the end. It’s the beginning.”

The supporting cast

Reno Wilson, Mike’s partner Carl McMillan, became a familiar face all over again as Stan Hill on NBC’s Good Girls, alongside voice work in the Transformers films. Katy Mixon, Molly’s sister Victoria, stepped straight into her own sitcom lead as Katie Otto on American Housewife, which ran on ABC from 2016 to 2021. Nyambi Nyambi, the diner’s dry-witted Samuel, took a dramatic turn as investigator Jay DiPersia on The Good Fight. Swoosie Kurtz, Molly’s mother Joyce, arrived on the show already a Broadway legend with two Tony Awards, and Rondi Reed, Mike’s mother Peggy, was a Tony winner herself for August: Osage County.

Why the show endures

Mike & Molly belonged to the last generation of network sitcoms built to run 20-plus episodes a year in front of a live audience, and it holds up because its engine was never the jokes about weight; it was a marriage the audience believed in. A decade on, with the full series in reruns and streaming, new viewers keep arriving at the same question this article answers. The cast, meanwhile, gave them two very different happily-ever-afters to follow: one became a mogul, the other remade his health, and both are still working.
