Stephen Curry scored 29 points, and the Golden State Warriors broke the game open in the third quarter to beat the Miami Heat 120-100 on Thursday night at Chase Center, spoiling Klay Thompson’s return to the Bay Area.
A warm welcome, then a quiet night
Thompson spent 13 seasons with Golden State, won four championships next to Curry, and helped build one of the best shooting backcourts the league has ever seen. The Chase Center crowd welcomed him back warmly when he was introduced with the Miami starters, and for a half, his new team matched his old one. The game was tied 53-53 at halftime, with Giannis Antetokounmpo driving Miami’s offense on his way to 20 points and 14 rebounds.
The return itself was quiet. Thompson finished with 11 points on 3 of 10 shooting in 23 minutes, with 3 assists and 2 blocks. It was a very different night from the one he had 24 hours earlier in Los Angeles, where he scored 30 points and hit the game-winning three with one second left in overtime to beat the Clippers. Miami was playing its second game in two nights, and by the second half the tired legs started to show.
The third quarter decides it
Golden State outscored Miami 38-23 in the third quarter, and the game was never close again. Curry made 6 of 12 three-pointers and needed only 28 minutes. Draymond Green scored just 2 points but handed out 11 assists, and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists as the Warriors piled up 36 assists as a team. Golden State shot 52.5 percent, scored 50 points in the paint, and ran out to a 21-7 edge in fast break points, with the lead growing to 20 at its peak.
Davion Mitchell led Miami with 22 points and 8 assists, and Bam Adebayo added 18 points and 10 rebounds. But the Heat committed 22 turnovers, shot 40.7 percent, and had no answer once the Warriors started running. Curry and the starters watched the closing minutes from the bench.

What it means
The win was Golden State’s sixth straight and moved the Warriors to 6-3, keeping them in the early group near the top of the Western Conference, the same pack as the Lakers, who won in Sacramento this week behind 40 points from Luka Doncic. Golden State kept the streak going without Jimmy Butler, who is still out after right ACL surgery; ESPN has reported a possible return between January and February. Miami fell to 3-6, and the loss wiped out the lift from Wednesday’s overtime win. For Thompson, the building that once shook for his biggest shots gave him one more ovation, then watched his old team remind him how hard it still is to win there.
