The NWSL playoffs opened with a stunner on Friday night. The seventh seeded Utah Royals went into San Diego and beat the No. 2 seed Wave 1-0, earning the first playoff win in club history in the first game of the quarterfinal round.

Kiana Palacios scored the only goal in the 30th minute, and goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made it stand up with four saves and a clean sheet. Utah did it the hard way, on the road, against a team that had beaten the Royals in all six of their previous meetings, according to Field Level Media.

A goal against the run of play

San Diego controlled most of the night. The Wave held 62 percent of the possession and outshot Utah 16 to 8, including 5 to 2 in shots on target, according to the Associated Press. None of it produced a goal.

Utah struck in the one moment that mattered most. CloƩ Lacasse sent a low driven cross into the box, and Palacios took a touch before firing the ball home in the 30th minute. The Associated Press noted that it was the first time Utah had led San Diego at any point during the 2026 season, in any competition.

The goal changed the shape of the match. Utah came into the playoffs on a four match winless streak, and a team in that kind of form might have folded after scoring so early. Instead, the Royals stayed compact and organized, and made San Diego chase the game for a full hour.

McGlynn slams the door

The second half belonged to McGlynn. San Diego pushed players forward and kept the ball camped in Utah’s half, but every serious chance ended with the Royals goalkeeper. She finished with four saves, and the shutout was her sixth clean sheet of the season, according to the Associated Press.

The loss was a painful one for the Wave. San Diego arrived on a seven match unbeaten streak and held home field as the higher seed, yet the club has now lost four straight playoff matches, the Associated Press reported. Utah, meanwhile, is the lowest seed left standing on its side of the bracket, and it is moving on.

What comes next for Utah

The Royals travel again in the semifinals. They will face the winner of Sunday’s quarterfinal between the third seeded Washington Spirit and the sixth seeded Portland Thorns. Three more quarterfinals are still to come this weekend, starting with Kansas City against Angel City on Saturday, so Utah will have to wait to learn its next opponent and its next road trip. The quarterfinal round runs through Sunday, November 8, the semifinals are set for November 13 to 15, and the championship is on November 21 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., according to U.S. Soccer.

However the semifinal goes, Friday already changed the story of Utah’s season. A club playing the first playoff game in its history walked into the home of the No. 2 seed and walked out with a win. Follow the rest of the postseason in our Sports coverage.
